Through the organization Chief Red Bear Children’s Lodge (the Lodge), Cowessess First Nation (CFN) is the first Indigenous community in Canada to assert its jurisdiction over child welfare and family services under the Bill-C92 Canada Act. The Lodge is currently developing its operations, in accordance with the Miyo Pimatisowin Act, that will provide support for its children and families that is rooted in traditional Indigenous values and cultural practices.

Job Description.

The Pre-Natal Leader is responsible for overseeing all pre-natal programming within the Prevention department.

The Pre-Natal Leader Must Be:

  • Passionate about creating change and advocating for families, unborn gifts and children.
  • Focused on traditional Indigenous pre-natal practices, child development and willing to help each child in their development during and after birth.
  • Open-minded, ready to embrace diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in public.
  • Experienced in working as a team player, willing to collaborate to establish an effective working environment and relationship with co-workers, children, and families.
  • Effective in interacting with children and families to identify needs and apply knowledge to develop programming.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently and as a team.

Core Responsibilities. 

General Duties:

  • Oversee staff and operations for all Pre-Natal programming.
  • Develop, model, research, and support new program activities when necessary.
  • Collaborate with staff, Cowessess First Nation staff and other entities to evaluate and observe each mother and child’s developmental progress.
  • Remain informed and enforce company policies, including organizational safety, and compliance.
  • Debrief both staff, Pre-Natal staff, and Executive Team as required.
  • Liaise and collaborate with Cowessess First Nation Health Department, outside agencies, parents and/or caregivers, Elders, community partners, and external care providers as needed.
  • Initiate and maintain working relationships with government agencies and service providers to build a team approach to support services.
  • Carry out any other work-related duties as requested by the Director of Prevention and Healing and/or delegate.

Human Resource Duties.

  • Document professional growth plans and employee evaluations for Pre-Natal staff.
  • Other duties may be assigned by Director of Prevention and Healing.

Administrative Duties.

  • Monitor program expenses and submit reports and documentation in accordance with financial policies.
  • Prepare and deliver reports and statistics on programming as may be required.
  • Perform quality control to ensure reports are completed correctly by staff prior to submission, following up with staff on content as needed.
  • Ensure anecdotal records are complete and accurate and report any discrepancies to Program Manager and/or delegate.

Leadership.

  • Support and oversee Pre-Natal program implementation, adhering to all policies, procedures, and governing regulations.
  • Train and support staff in knowledge and application of Pre-Natal programming.
  • Guide staff in navigating difficult high-risk activities and intervene as necessary.

Qualifications.

Education and Experience.

  • Degree in Human Services field, Pre-Natal Education + 5 years of experience, or a comparable combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • First Aid, CPR, valid Driver’s licence, and a reliable personal vehicle.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with pre-natal clients, families and children facing multiple challenges.

  • Seasoned leadership skills including problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Superior critical thinking skills, able to make quick but logical decisions.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, adept at team building.
  • Exceptional skills for maintaining efficiency and delegating tasks as needed.

Details.

  • Salary: $60,000 – $73,000m depending on education and experience.
  • Hours: Permanent Full Time. 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday.
  • Location: Cowessess First Nation and Regina, Sk.
